Stair Mass

megaphone, stainless steel, 4-channel sound installation

Stair Mass

Across the Prison Yard in the staircase of JC Cube are Stair Mass and Their Apartments, the exhibition’s “hidden tracks”, as it were, accessible from Thursdays to Saturdays. A site-specific sound installation, Stair Mass channels vulnerable sentiments associated with partings and farewells, and weaves them into melodies that ricochet off the building’s staircase and embrace passers-by. Amid a new wave of emigration in Hong Kong, Yim invites emigrants along with Set Tone Men, an a cappella group, to sing or hum “The Last Supper” by the Irish choral composer Bernard Sexton, a beautifully poignant piece that resonates with those facing separation in life. Visitors are invited to wander in, listen, reminisce, connect, and sing in this liminal space thus sonically transformed. Resulting from the artist’s continual reflections on ritual, remembrance, liberty, expression, and public space, the work experiments with fresh ways of forming collective experiences.

Their Apartments

2022

2’30”

While making Stair Mass, Yim Sui Fong visited some prospective emigrants; she then collaged the footage of empty apartments into a new work entitled Their Apartments. Echoing the mood of Stair Mass, this work deliberately and evocatively constructs scenes where a place has been left behind, by those seeking a different life ahead.
